Snare wire how many strands

I'd take them from the ends to retain sensitivity. You must have a cheap set of extra snare wires lying about. It's an easy experiment. WallyY Platinum Member. First disclaimer on my opinion below is that I like the Ludwig snare wires best on almost everything.

I notice more difference between snare wire metal and weight than I do when there are four more or less wires. Experimenting with snare wires isn't a waste of money, as you can use them to experiment with other drums to get just the right settings. If I was experimenting with wires, I would pick up a set of Noble and Cooley wires and maybe a set of Canopus vintage and some Puresound Blasters. Maleven said:.

I'm generally in the "crank the reso" camp, but honestly, I've found at lower tunings I like the reso head a little looser, too. Not a lot, mind you. I just find that lossening that reso head makes the snares more crisp and responsive for ghosting at lower dynamics. Something else to throw in the mix!!

Odd-Arne Oseberg Platinum Member. Gavin went really far and cut down to only 8 strands. Certainly not to my taste even when listening to him, but there are certainly options. Here's the Damion Reid snare:. I prefer less wires, more drum. I run a few 12's; mostly 16's; a few 20's. I found out Gadd plays less wires too. If I do not stick with what the manufacturer used for the drum when originally purchased, I personally just make random choices for random drums being curious what will change.

I am interested in why people make the choices they do for particular drums. I think this is one of the least discussed subjects by drummers and I would definitely get something from it. I have quite a few vintage drums. They were designed for 12 or 16 strand wires.

You can put more on them, but I feel they perform better with wires that fit into the beds. I think really wide snare wires rob the tone of drums with beds that were not designed for them. Drumstickdude Very well Known Member. I wish brands like Canopus or any for that matter would make 16 strands instead of 20, anything that allows a snare to 'breath' more must be a good thing.

There's not enough variety. The fewer strands the better, IMO I like hearing shell tone more than the snare tone. I wouldn't go more than 20 strands on any drum. BRicca Well-Known Member. Have them on most of my snares.

There's a couple drums in the rotation with virtually no beds and rounded edges that seem to like less wires. For those, I just dremel a few wires off making the 20s into 18s or even 16s. They are pricey wires compared to many others but definitely worth a try IMO. I'm a "wire junkie", I have a box of several different ones I try out on any snare I buy. You never really know in advance which set will suit which drum. Remember Me? Results 1 to 10 of Registered User.

I like it, because it has a good pop and a crack to it. It seems to have the right combination of both snare and drum sound I was considering trying a 20 strand set of snare wires, like either Pearl s or Puresound Custom 20 strand snare wires. But, I am afraid that I will get too much snare sound and not enough drum sound with the 20 strand. Thanks for any advice. Black Swamp Percussion. British Drum Company.
