Sand the hemlock in the direction of the woodgrain, using medium-grit sandpaper. Wipe off the dust with a rag. Sand the wood two more times, using fine, then ultra-fine sandpaper. Remove the sanding dust, using a rag or vacuum with a hose attachment. If some small particles remain, wipe the wood again with tack cloth.

Combine 3 parts dewaxed shellac with 2 parts denatured alcohol in a glass or plastic container such as an old jar, bucket or bowl. Blend the mixture with a wooden paint stir stick. Brush the thinned shellac onto the wood in the direction of the woodgrain, using a fine-bristled paintbrush that is made for wood stains.

Let the shellac coat rest for about 15 minutes. If any of the woodgrain rises, sand it lightly with ultra-fine sandpaper. The wood is harder than pine , but softer than many other varieties and this can lead to uneven staining. Bare hemlock is very light, so you can stain it any color from a light golden tint to black. Apply a finishing product to the wood , using smooth, long paint brush strokes. If you want to change the color of the hemlock lumber , use a suitable color of wood stain, like golden oak.

If you do not wish to change the color of the wood , use a drying oil instead, such as linseed oil or tung oil. Despite serious safety concerns, hemlock leaves , root, and seeds are used to make medicine. It is used for breathing problems including bronchitis, whooping cough, and asthma; and for painful conditions including teething in children, swollen and painful joints, and cramps.
