Why does safari need keychain access

To turn it on, head over to Preferences in Safari, then the AutoFill tab. There are a few options, including information from contacts, user names and passwords, and credit cards. Just like a third-party password manager, you can manually enter logins to save inside the Passwords tab in Settings on your iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, you can manually create a password profile in Safari. You can, however, import passwords from either Firefox or Chrome. One note: I had a series of mishaps trying to import from Firefox into Safari. Safari would invariably crash, even after I made a series of tweaks to Firefox. I finally gave up and tried it with Chrome, and the import worked immediately. Your mileage may vary. You should see your passwords listed there. Note that while your login keychain is the default, it is unlocked as soon as you log into your Mac. You can increase security by creating a non-login keychain — all this requires is an additional password when you start up or log into your Mac.

Apple added the iCloud Keychain to enable this data to sync, via iCloud, to all your devices. You activate this in the iCloud settings on your Mac or iOS device. When you visit a website and encounter a login form, Safari on the Mac or on iOS will pre-fill the form if it has stored a password for that site. And if none of these options are correct, which may happen if a website has changed its domain, for example, click or tap Passwords to search all the saved passwords.

Tap one of them to see its user name and password.
